ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION

According to David Liscio when he wrote about the Hunter 340 in 'Sailing Magazine' in 2019, "The Hunter 340 is a fiberglass masthead sloop with a tall, fractional rig. It features a spade rudder and a bolted-on lead keel. Constructed by Hunter Marine from 1998 to 2001, the 340 was engineered to carry less weight aloft with smaller mast sections.

This was accomplished by using swept spreaders and reverse diagonals as well as mast support struts, a system descending from the B&R design invented by the late Lars Bergstrom and Sven Ridder. The design eliminates the need for a backstay and allows for a large roach main to power the boat, while the 110-percent working jib provides stability. The drawback of swept spreaders is that they keep the main from being fully eased when sailing downwind.

The hull-to-deck joint is through-bolted and fitted with a continuous rubrail. The mast and boom are aluminum. Most deck fittings are stainless steel."

The spaciousness and uncluttered cockpit is achieved by two factors, firstly the lack of a backstay as mentioned above, and secondly, the mainsheet traveller is mounted above your head on the top of the targa arch.

IN THE CABIN

The Hunter 340 enjoys a well-devised layout that offers space for everyone on board. In the saloon only a person taller than 193 cm (6ft 4in) will need to duck! There's space for eight around the dinette and actually sleeping for seven adults at a pinch using the convertible dinette and the lounge.

The galley is well equipped offering all the appliances you would want for an extended stay on board. The large top-loading fridge / freezer is ideally loacated next to the twin sinks. There's a twin LPG burner cooktop and oven along with a microwave.

The cabins and beds are of a good size for the length of this yacht and the bathroom is actually quite roomy. The chart table is practical whilst not using up too much of the valuable cabin space.

IN THE COCKPIT

The center pedestal and helm position alows ease of movement around the cockpit and presents the key controls and the Chartplotter to the skipper. It inlcudes a small cooler for a couple of drinks and folding leaf side tables for socialising when not underway. There's easy access to the integral swim platform and the boat offers a spacious and comfortable solution for those wanting to go day sailing with friends aboard or even weekends enjoying coastal cruising.
